Case study · a real install

Getting Highline fiber: our own install, step by step

We don’t just write about the Bastrop fiber build — we signed up for it. This is a real, first-person account of one Highline install in the county, updated at every step so you know exactly what to expect. No spin: if something goes sideways, it goes here too.

Signed up

Called Highline and picked the top plan: 2-Gig symmetrical fiber (2,000 Mbps up and down), with indoor and outdoor mesh Wi-Fi and a dedicated IP, no annual contract. Paid a $49.50 install fee and a $131.45 pre-install charge that day, and got scheduled on the call. Friendly, quick, no upsell games.

Highline came out and surveyed the site

A crew showed up and walked the property to plan the fiber route and drop location. Fast turnaround — less than a day after signing up. That's a good sign the build in this part of the county is well underway.

Outside drop & trench

The crew trenches the fiber line to the house and sets a small exterior box. 8am–12pm window; you don't have to be home for this part. Internet isn't live yet after this step — it's the outside work.

Inside install — internet goes live

Equipment goes in inside the house and the service is turned on. 8am–12pm. This is the day the fiber is actually live and running.

Real-world results

The honest part: actual speed tests (does 2-Gig really deliver?), Wi-Fi coverage with the mesh, latency, and how it compares to what we had before. We'll post the numbers here, good or bad.
